That’s a nice explanation.
I was under the impression too much light after a certain point is detrimental to plant health unless supplemented by co2

Fattening up nicely! I'm going off the idea that you can burn your plants by being too close. A close pal had been experimenting with that theory and he's getting the best results when running the light 30-40cm from the canopy.

I think @Captain Beefheart is right and they're a little hungry. I think most people see an improvement when they back off with the LED is because the plants don't work as hard and they can survive with less.

Of course you could burn them if the LEDs are hot and they're heating up the canopy but you're not going to burn plants with too much light.

I also think you took too many leaves off but that opinion could be taken as subjective

Exit: "ate hot sand"?! Fuck you autocorrect lol
Thanks man.

Perhaps it's not the closeness of light, but the intensity in relation to the duration of exposure, like humans and sunburn. All my plants suffer in veg if the LEDs are turned up full, which I believe relates to DLI. I have to keep photoperiods on fully dimmed at about 50cm from the canopy for 4 weeks after the switch to 12/12, otherwise they start looking deficient, then after 4 weeks with the lights up full they look very healthy for a couple of weeks after, and I haven't amended the soil at that point, suggesting to me they have all the nutrients they need:

I think my LED is probably too close at 15cm and turned up full, but haven't got much choice at the moment. If I put those young plants (currently under T5s) under the LEDs, which would save me money, they would look very sick within a few days. I need to learn to sync my autos better with my photoperiods:

I think you and Captain are right that they are hungry. I added some MBP and alfalfa meal a couple of days ago, so that will take time to break down. This is the first batch of new soil and my second runs have all done better after the first harvest and re-amendment.

I never took many leaves off though and rarely ever remove anything from my autos, I think only the bottom two fan leaves after they turned chlorotic/necrotic - that's just how the plant looks. I think I've also turned a corner with my photoperiods in that respect. I used to defoliate quite heavily, mainly to prevent mildew and botrytis in my insanely humid place, but I think I have enough fans taking care of that now, and I do think defoliation can be detrimental for some strains, if not all, but I have seen and know people who achieve great results with heavy defoliation on some strains.

I should also have added a cover crop to fix nitrogen, but so far I haven't been doing that with autos, mainly because I'm not too bothered about them - I mainly grow autos to use up the space while my cuttings or seedlings develop and to try out different strains, then maybe later if I like the auto version I might buy a photoperiod version, although they might be completely different. I am impressed with this Zkittlez auto so far though, so may grow it again.

Bruce Bugbee talks about DLI here too, so what @seymore_budz said is correct, that cannabis can handle very high DLI as long as all other factors are optimum, but I'm not sure how much more optimum we could force living soil to be, so it's all a balancing act. It's probably easier with hydro in that you can instantly raise the EC/CF of the nutrient solution and see rapid responses:

Thanks for the kind comments @MrNice and @Greenfingers. That is above my toilet. It was just an alcove before containing a crappy makeshift tent I made from 2x1 and Mylar sheets, but light leaked too much, it was ugly, indiscreet and inefficient, so I turned it into a cupboard. Unfortunately, it's not so discreet that I wouldn't have to hide all the plants if the fuzz turned up and wanted to use the toilet
