Josh's hempy adventure

Post by Josh »

Watsup growroom decided to ditch the soil and give hempy buckets a go this time time around.
Pretty simple concept if you've never heard of the hempy method. Basically just take any container, drill a small hole about 2-3 inches up from the bottom for water to escape, fill with your choice of medium and that's it
The reservoir at the bottom acts as a water shelf, basically hydro for lazy or broke growers
I'll be following the original instructions stated by Hempy himself.
3/1 ratio of perlite to vermiculite, feed with every water and ph to 6.2

I'm going to be using three 9.5 L buckets, also drilled a bunch of holes around the tops for future training.

From left to right in the picture, I've got 2 cali connection sour diesel and 1 gr420 holy grail kush. Also my little super skunk auto in the 2L

The clones are well rooted and looked hungry so fed with 1.0 ec

For 13 L of water
6 ml silicate
6.5 ml calmag
Ec was 0.5 at that point so added ionic grow until 1.0
Ph'd to 6.2

Currently under 600 watt hortilux mh

I'll keep everyone posted with the progress, excited to finally try this method

Thanks for stopping in

Hey everyone!

Sry I haven't updated in a while, plants have looked pretty sad tbh
One thing I can say for sure is that until the roots hit the bottom reservoir it's really hard to know when to water.
I went 2 days without watering when they were young and damn near killed the whole tent
Everything was wilted, also red/purple stems from cold temps I think. Had a cold front come through so they suffered for a bit.

But as far as I can tell the roots have finally hit the bottom so growth is starting to pick up. I added 2 more clones that I had just to fill the tent, 1 sour diesel and the other holy kush.
One of the big yellow pots I put chunky perlite up to the rez and the other pot I put hydroton up to the rez line, then filled the test of the way up with perlite/vermiculite mix

I have to say it is a pretty cool way of growing, about as far from organic as you can possibly get. Lol
But on the flip side if you're a lazy grower like me this is NOT the way to go. Unless you don't mind watering every day that is

So far I've been feeding:
1 ml per liter silicate
Ionic grow added until .8 ec
Ph set to 6.0

Been training quite a bit with pipe cleaners, topped once. Twice if you count the accidental broken top on one of the diesel plants
Intend on keeping these very short, I'll be flipping soon tbh
I'm gonna give them 1.5-2 more weeks of veg and then 12/12 it is

I’ve always wanted to do this, every time I look at a mop bucket I’ve thought yeah that would be cool!.
I saw this style somewhere else an think it can be really good.first off I’d never feed calmag as it messes with ph in the medium.better to spray.also while they are small I’d only add enough water to jus past where I think the roots are so you haven’t got stagnant water at the bottom.pretty hard to guess as they grow a lot quicker than you think.the vermiculite will keep everything moist down there for a day as you say it’s daily feeding.i can’t remember exactly how it was done but that’s how I’d approach it till roots get to the bottom.they look green enough so your doing alright and you’ve flipped at the right time aswell to keep them small but ideally you want to know the roots are very near bottom first.id cut a viewing window at the hole level an put a bit of Perspex in the buckets so you can see wot the roots are up to an cover it with something g so light can’t get in an block it with algae.they look big enough that there’s roots down low an now you’ve flipped 2 weeks of veg before flower starts should see them down there easily so good luck mate il be watching this one 👍
