Re: IslandGrower's 1st DWC Grow - White Widow
Yeah you can blame GG#4 for that bad typo!!
That was supposed to be PH 5.84 NOT 8.4
PH is dialed in pretty good in the res and goes anywhere from 5.8x - 6.2
Roots look small but I am not even concerned. The plant seems to be doing good. I am wondering if its how I planted from soil to direct growing medium. Wonder if that stressed it out any during root development. I did not use a root stimulant but I will be sure to do this on the next run. 1st hydro, 1st DWC so I am learning as I go. Now I know what to expect for the next run.
As for the leaves, I have been removing only the big ones causing no light to get to the new areas of the plant. Once the leaves are larger I remove them and the smaller leaves are good to go a week or two later. I never went overkill on her, 4-6 leaves in total were removed. Plant doesnt seem to be responding badly to the trimmings, new growth, the tipping has taken off, now time will tell.
Next week I am gonna flip her to flower and see what we end up with!
I will be sure to stay away from the GG#4 next time I post, at least until I get the post completed. Typos are as bad as nutrient burns haha

Re: IslandGrower's 1st DWC Grow - White Widow
Its XMAS and its the day I got my light
Wife ended up purchasing me a BESTVA Led light.Says 1000 watts but I know how that LED marketing works. It is 185 Watts
With that light and my Mars Hydro Reflector 48 (102 watts) that will give me 2 lights in there for 1 plant with a total draw of 287 Watts
I am hoping this new light will help in flower and help me get bigger buds this harvest.
You can view the light details here if you want so you get a understanding what I have. Seems to be a great product and has IR as well just like the light I have now
Last night I changed the nutrient program to Flowering schedule. Today I flipped the lights to 12/12 and tomorrow the new light gets installed
Merry Christmas everyone and happy growing!

Whoop whoop for the new light mate, bet you well excited!
All looking good mate. If you can get the PH into range as the lads said she will love you for it, certain nutrients are taken up at certain levels of PH, the ones your plant is after are taken up between 5.8 and 6.2, thats why the boys are saying get it to 5.8 and let it drift. As for the roots, they should be bigger but the plant is looking healthy. Ideally you dont want your res higher than 21c, again you seem to be doing great anyway, but having these numbers dialed in will only benefit you when it comes to harvest.
Im excited to see this LED in action. Keep up the good work buddy!

You know it is very ironic that you bring up a topic that I am here to discuss today. That is the res water temps.
Each day I do check the ppm/ph of my res and I do notice the temps in there are warm. As soon as I lift the top I can almost feel heat coming out. The res right now was 23.9 when I checked about a hour ago. Sadly, I never had a chance to tend to her today because of my holiday work schedule.
When I check I still notice the brownish on the roots. I was honestly thinking this was from the foliar feeding as it drips onto the pebbles and works its way into the res. But today things look different.
I changed the res water a day or two ago and when I added the water the temps were reading about 15C. I honestly thought this was too low. I thought the room temp water was ideal and I was wrong. I totally missed this and when I posted my temps nobody has pointed it out until you just did.
I ended up bringing the temps up to about 23C in the res
Today I checked the roots and I see what looks like brown slime balls on the bottom of the basket. Again, I never had time to get a great photo outside the LED room, but I will. For now here is the photo I have

This makes me believe that this has to do with the temp of the res. Now I have a slime building up. I added a good dose on enzymes before I left to see if it can help kill the slime that has started.
One thing I am going to do is take a piece of cardboard or other material and cut out the shape of my res and place it on top to make a cover to block off any light that may be getting through the clay stones to the bottom of the res. Just for extra added security for any possible light leaks inside the res. She is sealed off tight outside of that.
At this point where it is so early, should I consider using H2O2 to attempt to stop this before it gets any worse, and get all that brown off the roots and do a new mix of nutes?
As for the temps, I need to figure out a way to bring it down. The air pump is inside the grow room tent which has a temp of about 23C which is good for the plant above the roots, but as I learned today, not so good for the growth in the res.
The room my tent is in has a temp of about 15C so I may take the pump out of the tent and place it in the cooler room. Another thing I wasn't thinking about was how the air temp enters the res, its through the pump as it takes in air. If there is warm air being taken by the pump then that warm air goes in the res. That changes tomorrow!
What is the lowest water temp I can have in the res?
That's all I got for now :)

As for my PH it is at 5.83 - 6.02 when I check depending when it was last fed nutes.Keeno wrote: ↑Tue Dec 26, 2017 8:04 amWhoop whoop for the new light mate, bet you well excited!

What you read for ph 8.4 was a typo. I missed the 5 at the beginning lol Blame GG#4 for that one!

Re: IslandGrower's 1st DWC Grow - White Widow
So tomorrow when lights come on, I will be adding some hydrogen peroxide to the res
I will add 30ml/gallon. I do not have H2O2 (35%) or other types of solutions like hydroguard and want to treat it soon as I can. The Hydrogen Peroxide 3% I have will have to do.
Curious question about this...where I do have some slime balls on the bottom of the netpot would it be wise to topfeed some through the pebbles? I am guessing no and that is because of the peroxide coming in contact with the stem, pebbles and could cause reactions or break down a growing medium....could be wrong but figuring where it could come in contact directly with the peroxide it may help resolve this sooner than small amounts of mist.
Or I can fill up a res with water and add peroxide and dip her in for a deep swim without the top feeding
I will get these roots white and back on track, just switched to flower so cant have issues. Everything was fine for the past 6 weeks until today.
Fingers crossed for me guys!

Hi island grower i am not a hydro guy but from diaries i have read and searching the net you need beneficial 's to prevent the rot coming back and aid recovery. Hydroguard is a good option but there is others out there. Also do you keep a air cap from the solution to the base of the net pot?
