Re: Grumpy Toad's Fall 2022 grow

Post by Grumpy Toad »

One week from sprouting. The two Midnight Moonlight seedling are the tallest, White Wedding about average and the Zweet Inzanity is short. Full disclosure: a day after the Zweet Inzanity sprouted I tried to move a clay pebble away from it and I pulled the seedling from the plug. I used the “five-second rule” and immediately back in. It is actually growing very well so, no harm, no foul.

I'm using the three part base nutrients, Hydroguard and CalMag at 1.5EC in the containers. I've been using a spray bottle to moisten around the plugs while waiting for tap roots to hit the reservoir in the bottom of the buckets. By the time another week goes by they should be rocking.

The lights are dimmed pretty low right now and on 18/6. I'll increase wattage when I have a couple sets of leaves on each. The tent environment is lights on: 80F / 50% RH and lights off: 76F / 50% RH. I have a humidifier running in lung room during lights on. In another week or two I'll need to switch to my dehumidifier. My last run was the first using the controller on my AC Infinity inline fan. It really helps smooth out the highs and lows in temperature and relative humidity. I think the biggest hurdle that it reacted well to was the humidity spike that occurs at lights out. That was a game changer!

I've put a yellow and blue sticky trap in the tent. Once plants are taller I'll have them up on the pebbles where they will work better.

I invested in a pair of Method 7 glasses for full spectrum LED use. I've got other glasses that filter UVA/UVB but figure to use any means I can to protect my eyesight. I've certainly spent money on more frivolous things.

I am definitely open to any discussion/questions/comments on my grow.

Here's a couple photos from this morning. The short plant is the Zweet Inzanity I disturbed.

End of week two update:

Feeding at 1.5 EC. Advanced 3-part base, Hydroguard, CalMag & Mammoth P. Increased the wattage on lights to 210 watts. I'll keep increasing slowly and get to full strength at flip. Tent environment is holding steady, both temps and humidity. But I will need to watch carefully with daytime high temperatures hitting 111-112 degrees in the next couple days.

Progress of plants so far:

White Wedding #1: This is a runt or stunted. It's way behind the others and, if I had to gamble, I'm saying this one is not making the journey. Not unexpected to lose one, so I'm not stressing.

White Wedding #2: Growing well, the leaves have the short squat look of Indica.

Midnight Moonlight #1: This is the tallest plant and it has the longest, narrowest leaves.

Midnight Moonlight #2: This one is almost the same height as #1 but the leaves are only ½ the length.

Zweet Inzanity: The odd one out is looking fine. Squat and healthy.

Couple photos:

End of week three – veg

Main thing this week is heat. Sacramento, CA just had a high temperature of 114 F. Hottest temperature ever recorded. Forecast today is 115 F. This will last until the next weekend. I'm balancing my lights, exhaust and trying to cut back on power usage from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm as requested to help avoid rolling blackouts. But bottom line is that I'm able to maintain an acceptable environment.

Still feeding at 1.5/1.6 EC. 8 ml/gallon each of the three-part base, 2 ml/gallon each of CalMag Plus & Hydroguard and a splash of Mammoth P. Water was adjusted to 69 F from the 77 F at my tap and filtered using R/O. Feeding every 5th day right now and getting about 40% runoff. Will keep on that schedule until no runoff then switch to every 4th day.

Lights on temperature is 80/81 F and humidity 45/50 %. Lights off temp about 75/76 F and humidity 45-50%. Lights are still at 210 watts and they are 24” from the tops of plants. Still running a humidifier as outdoor temps are running 106 to 115F all this week and ambient humidity is anywhere from 35% at night to 5% during peak heat.

As you can see I still have the runt. I'm sitting on the fence about keeping or chopping it. I'm leaning to chopping it as I believe an unhealthy plant creates a place for pest & disease to get a foothold in your grow. I'm also thinking that with five plants I spend 20% of my time (SWAG) on each plant and if I'm down to 4 it will go up to 25%. I can also veg a little longer if needed to fill the space. Any thoughts?

That's some mad heat @Grumpy Toad. They seem ok for it. The plants look stable and uniform which is food to see. I look forward to seeing this progress 🙏

Plants are doing fine but I had to dim lights when temp hit 116 F yesterday. The central AC in the house just couldn't keep up. But this is why I waited a couple months to start growing again. Didn't want to fight heat during flower. When I flip in three weeks it should be much cooler & start ramping up the lights. :thanks:

End of week 4 update:

The heat wave has finally subsided so I increased the wattage on my lights. They are now at 300 watts combined and sitting at 30” above the plants.

I topped all the plants except for the White Wedding 1 (runt). The two Midnight Moonlight were topped above the 3rd node and the other two Ethos strains were topped above 4th node. Started to do some LST by pulling tops down and to side. I drilled holes around the top of the buckets when I set them up. These make tying down branches a snap.

Feeding at 1.5 EC with same mix as previous. I've watered/fed every 5th day and had less than 10% runoff today. I'll go to every 4th day to feed/water now.

All the plants seem to be doing well. Even the runt is starting to show growth. It seems like the plants that were topped did very well with it. Side branches are filling in quickly.

End of week 5 (veg)

Weather has changed drastically with an increase in humidity that required adjustments to the lung room environment. I had lights off humidity, in the tent, hit 65% and would like to keep that at 60% max right after lights off. I've discontinued the humidifier in the lung room and have my dehumidifier ready. First I'm going to adjust the AC Infinity controller to lower set point on relative humidity and see how well that works. Definitely a lot less energy use.

Plants are doing well. I'm still working on training and I think it's going great. With one exception. I got a little too carried away on the White Wedding 2. You can see in the photos where it started to split right at the top. Used some electrical tape and a bamboo skewer to hold together. Considered a cable tie but figure the tape will work and have some stretch for future growth.

Nutrients are still the same, as are the lights. Plan is still to flip October 1st. Based on that I'm anticipating harvest around December 15th.

And, a PSA: The power at my home “flickered” for a second. My TV, Internet, laptop, stereo all just kept working. But I noticed the clock on my microwave was flashing reset. Made me think I should check the grow. Everything was working except for my oscillating tower fan. Good idea to check things no matter how brief.
