High heat during flower definitely wont help things, but in my opinion it all comes down to genetics buddy

I got a triple cheese cut that grows top buds as big as my fist, but they're not near as dense as my franco lemon cheese. Just the way it is

genetics and light intensity (intensity = density)

but high temps like Josh mentioned wont help as well as mild over nuting leading to foxtailing is also one that can make airy buds

finally id say that extreme over nuting can cause what i think of as diamond buds. they form tiny crowns and dont grow out to propa buds but are hard as diamonds

I agree with everything said - genetics, heat, light intensity and I will add too much nitrogen in mid / late flower. I generally cut it out (in any meaningful dose) at about week 3 of flower.
for sure man, gotta keep a lid on that N after week 3 for sure, effects flavour and burnability (if thats a word) as well
