well as a cherokee native, there is the concept of the medicine wheel, and each quarter is associated with an animal spirit. most people choose 4, if you follow the deeper mysteries you can have up to 16....or more depending on your affinity with nature/spirits.
the fox for me represents my south - the element of fire - associated with cunning, observation, adaptability, etc.
the giraffe for me represents my north - the element of earth - associated with longevity, far-sight, and looking into the future.
I'm still working with east and west -- air and water, my two weakest points...
air is considered the east element, water the west, most people have avian or aquatic creatures in these areas.
each animal can mean different things to the person who has found that animal in their lives.
there is a lot more metaphysics to it.
most people assume just 1 spirit animal, it is usually their favorite animal from childhood or something.
