This is a sweet diary @seymore_budz didn't know you were also doing NFT! What are the ec ph and temp probes you use? Interested in the data loggers etc
Thank you

Cheers @wutang! I'm using a blue lab combi for the PH/EC/Water Temp. All the lights, fans and co2 stuff is managed by Trollmaster. I picked it up cheap on ebay and it came with the CO2 sensor and control gear which was a bonus. That lot retails at about £800 but I got the lot for £300. I'll be posting a review later on this month I reckon.

Re: LA S.A.G.E X birthday cake X strawbanana cream NFT SOG run
Just a quick update for reference. The CO2 ran out yesterday so looks like a tank might last only 2.5 days. I did however put a lot less water in then I should have. The instructions said 300ml but when looking online I should be adding 600-800ml
I've also cycled the resoviour early as they were getting pretty hungry! EC is now at 1.7EC.
They seem to be growing fast so far. Hopefully they keep up this pace!

Re: LA S.A.G.E X birthday cake X strawbanana cream NFT SOG run
What's up GR420,
So, these girls seem to be loving life atm. They're showing signs of a little heat stress as it's been a little warm recently so the room peaked at 32C. It should have been fine but the solenoid on the co2 generator broke and the CO2 levels dropped to around 400ppm :( That's going back this week. Probably won't replace it and just get my koney back due to the poor quality of the solenoid. I'll keep an eye out for a better one or buy the cheaper model without the solenoid and fit my own.
Food wise they're receiving a pre-flower base feed with some buddahs tree silicic acid, superthrive, TNC BactorrS13, Hygrozyme. I couldn't get any supervit so they're going without until I can grab some more Friday. EC is around 1.7EC but drops over the course of a few days to 1.6EC. PH is set to around 6 after it's balanced out.
Lights are on at 60% atm. Will up them to 100% once I see the start of flowers. I've got to say, using the bacteria over the silver peroxide seems to be working a lot better. The roots are crazy thick and all lifting out of the water. When using the silver peroxide there was a thick mat but nowhere near as much root growth. I'll be sticking to the bacteria moving forward. I've never been a fan of peroxide but I thought I'd give it ago.
Temps are back down to 26C and humidity hangs around the 65% mark. The plants are a little ragaty and wild but I really needed to rush this one through. I'll throw some netting in and hope for the best
I've cut the mother back too. I did take some clones but I'll probably stash the mother somewhere else until I'm ready to setup again then use the root stock for a grafting experiment.
Mother pre-trim

Mother after-trim

Re: LA S.A.G.E X birthday cake X strawbanana cream NFT SOG run
Hey Mr.Nice,
Soo.., when growing in NFT or any recirculating system, one of your biggest enemies is root infecting fungus/bacteria. The reason why it's a bigger threat in recirculating systems is that the bad stuff has longer to hang about and grow within the tank and spread. Couple that with a thick root mat that blocks the gully and restricts flow causing anaerobic conditions can be a recipe for disaster. There are a couple of ways you can deal with it and all have their pros/ cons.
1) Water chiller. This is more for if you have a nutrient temprature problem but due to the flat wide surface of these nutriculture systems and high powered lighting, things can get a little hot if you're not monitoring. For me it was more of an issue when using HID lighting due to the heat from the lamps. If your water goes about 26C, it inhabits the ability for the water to hold onto oxygen and that can cause anaerobic conditions and the bad stuff can thrive. A water chiller keeps the water cool so you can keep hold of the DO and things stay healthy. Negatives of a water chiller is that they cost money to run, they add an additional point of failure to your system and plants don't like cold roots. Water under 18C slows the uptake of water and nutrients considerably according to what I've read. Ideally the water should be around d 22C.
2) peroxide in solution. This is basically bleech. The silver peroxide is just hydrogen peroxide with added silver. The silver stabilises the peroxide a bit so it stays in solution for longer. Negatives to this solution is you're wiping out everything so it's kind of a clean slate for anything to take over. An analogy would be chemotherapy. Plants don't have an immune system so mother nature provides. Plants release exudates through the roots and that attracts friendly bacteria to colonise the roots and provide some protection from the bad stuff. Just like chemotherapy, by applying peroxide, you're wiping out everything including the good stuff. The trouble is without any friendly bacteria, the bad stuff can establish and attack very quickly. Just like how chemotherapy wipes out your immune system.
3) beneficial bacteria can colonise the root zone, feeding from the exudades and providing protection. The good stuff will even attack the bad stuff and allow the roots to recover. There are many types of bacteria, some endo and some ecto (lives on the inside or outside of the root). These also provide a bunch of additional benefits that aid the plant too like fixing nutrients and allowing them to stay available for longer etc. The negatives with bacteria in hydroponics is that I'd your water gets too hot it can affect the good stuff too as they normally prefer aerobic conditions. They can also lead to sediment build up around the pumps and outlets causing issues with blockages etc.
Previously I've gone down the peroxide route when running NFT but last grow I had issues with rot regardless of using more than the recommended dose of peroxide. I guess the amount of pythium in the rootzone was too much got the peroxide to deal with. I've tinkered with bacteria in a aeroponics system and that went really well but was super paranoid about using it in NFT because of bro-science
I've been doing quite a lot of research on how bacteria and fungus has a close relationship with plants. I really believe its the key to why people prefer organic bud. I shared a podcast earlier here and the guy sums it up perfectly. Nutrients can grow a big plant but we're not really interested in material. We're interested in the secondary metabolites; the oils and terpes etc. And the only thing that increases them are the secondary metabolites that the good organisms provide like amino acids etc. I did start moving down that route but for some reason I decided to shift to the peroxide when I moved over to NFT. I made a mistake for sure. Even the weed is different. Full of crystals but it's not as tasty as the stuff I've grown using beanies. The differences are subtle but 100% noticeable.
Sorry for the long winded answer, I just thought it deserved a long ass explanation

Lol no problem. I didn't do a great job of explaining it all as that rabbit hole goes deep :) It takes 500 words just to scratch the surface.

Re: LA S.A.G.E X birthday cake X strawbanana cream NFT SOG run
Wasup GR420,
Managed to grab some Hesi Supervit finally so 1 ml went into the resoviour tonight but I'll also cycle the tank Monday I think.
Thinks are motoring along nicely. Bit gutted about the co2 generator as just with a little co2 you can see the growth spurt they had in just a few days. Might get a better quality machine or even go down the bottled gas route when I rebuild everything later this year.
The EC has been dropping quite a bit. That's most the reason why I'm going to cycle early. PH seems to settle at ~6.2PH no matter what I do. If I drop it to 5.8PH it's back at 6.2 in about 6 hours. Probably the beanies causing that. As long as its not dropping drastically I'm happy. The plants seem to be loving it. 12 days into flower and no signs of crowning yet. Bring on the stretch!

Peace
