hi mrs b the correct term for your knobbly bits is a boss or bosses it is caused by a fungus that attacks trees and before they die some are cut off and used to make wooden bowls or decorative items,most common on old elm trees.
heres a couple of pics of my old collected spruce tree bonsai in training,pleased with this one.

These oak trees were all chopped down during the 1st world war...
Them trees there have sprung up from the old rootballs. Fucken amazing.
