Grumpy Toad's Fall Fruity Fiasco

Post by Grumpy Toad »

Back from vacation about two hours and I've got seeds soaking. Not like I'm itching to get growing...

Grumpy Toad's Fall Grow!

Grow setup
4' x 4' tent
(1) HLG 260 watt LED and (2) HLG 135 watt LED
4” AC Infinity exhaust with phresh filter
Spare bedroom as lung room. Homes central Heat/AC for major temperature control. Humidifier or dehumidifier, in lung room, as needed.
Tower fan, intent, for circulation
Two computer type fans circulating air above lights

Cultivars

Orange Runtz Cake (Conscious Genetics) Thanks GR420 & Sponsors. Watched forum members grows and I have high expectations.

Banana Tangie #7 (Crockett Family Farms/DNA Genetics) second best I've grown

Lemon Jeffery (Irie Genetics) I bought the hype and the beans

Orange Gasm (Irie Genetics) Again, I bought the hype and the beans

Strawberry Gelatti (Sin City Seeds) (Gelatti x Raskal Berries) – Freebie seeds and unable to find any information on these. But I hear good things about Raskal Berries crosses so I'm willing to give it a chance.

Midnight Moonlight (Lovin' In Her Eyes) repeat of the best I've grown (but no fruit)

Grow method

Six each, 3.5 gallon (14 liter approx) buckets

Hempy bucket method using perlite in the bottom 2” (to the level of drain hole). Then filled with 4:1 mixture perlite to vermiculite. I add a layer of expanded clay pellets on top to help prevent algae and/or fungus gnats.

I bottom water from the top. That is, I pour my feed slowly down one spot to fill up the 2” reservoir and let the feed wick up to the plant.

Feeding

Advanced Nutrients PH perfect base nutrients
Advanced Nutrients additives:
Rhino Skin (silica)
Bud Candy (carbohydrate)
Big Bud (flower boost)
Overdrive (flower finisher)
Microbes:
Dynomyco (Thanks to GR420 sponsor)
Mammoth P
Root Inoculate:
Hydroguard (bacillus amyloliquefaciens)
CalMag
Tap water – average ppm is 36 and ph is 7+.
No need to ph with the nutrients used. I do check ph and PPM/EC and record on each feed. I also adjust the water temperature to 66 – 70 degrees F before mixing batch and feeding.

All seeds have sprouted so I transferred each to a starter plug soaked with a weak Recharge solution. Put plugs into the buckets and now I'll use a squirt bottle to keep things moist for the next few days. Things are going according to plan so far. Lights are dimmed to a total of 200 watts.

End of week 1

BT7 refused to sprout. All the other seeds were quick to take off. I should have known, because I grew the BT7 before and had issues sprouting. So I added a second BT7 seed to the paper towel to try and increase my odds. Next day it looked like one had cracked and some white showing. Stuck both into a starter plug but.....no bueno. So I just grabbed a seed at random from my storage container and came up with Indiana Bubblegum.

I've just been using a spray bottle to moisten the plugs. I'll start a weak nutrients feed after a few leaves form.

just a P.S.A.

Mixed up some nutrients and figured to check tap water first thing. My Bluelabs ph pen read 10.1 from the tap. No worries, grab the strips and voila, 6.5-ish. So calibrate the pen and wonder of wonders it now reads 6.5 and that seems reasonable. Anyway, my point is that strips or drops are a great second opinion when you pen's reading seems suspect. And calibrate for accuracy if that is important to your grow style.

Update end of week 2

After the two BT7 seeds failed to launch, I started a Indiana Bubblegum seed and it's now poking up it's head. Also had an issue with the Orange Gasm. The first leaves started turning brown so I pulled it and soaked another seed which sprouted and is in it's bucket. The other four plants are doing well.

We had a few really hot days here and I unplugged one of the three LED lights to help keep cool. Heat spell is over and I'm back to 200 watts of light. Feeding base nutrients, silica, CalMag, Hydroguard and Mammoth P. EC is .67 and ph is 6.1. Tent is running 80F and 45% RH with lights on. 75F and 45% RH with lights off.
