Old School NL5 Living Soil Comparison Grow

Post by Tictok »

Hey all,

About time for another diary. My first diaries were an age ago and me finding my feet with this growing lark. Seeing as there's a lot of NL5 grows going on.

So now we have my favourite clone that I've run four times now of the original NL5, before it went to Europe and Sensi crossed it and made it famous over here.

These seeds came from The Green Stash in California and have been preserved by them since getting them from Indians from an island off Seattle in the late 90s.

It's the best weed I've ever vaped and takes you right back.

Two identical clones, Canna Bio Terra soil, the left plant is using the usual canna 'organic' nutes, the right plant is using living soil amendments after preparing the soil and 'cooking' for two weeks before planting.

https://livingsoilsfertiliser.com/

These guys sell small packs of amendments and have excellent instructions. The pot is smaller (11lt) than he 20ltr minimum recommendation for living soil with scaled down amendments. I am expecting issues later due to pot size but it works it will be a game changer for me. The amendments work out cheaper than the bottled nutes.

Plant on the left is the canna nutes, plant on the right is the living soil.

1 week after planting identical clones;

2 weeks 3 days and after the first amendment;

So far so good.

Thanks for checking by. :thanks:

Thanks man, took an age to source these seeds.

Still have a bunch from an open pollination the breeder did, this pheno was found from his selected line from a small search I did. It's frosty AF and proper long lasting old school high.

Its a good question. The best results were at bang on 8 weeks, but there wasn't too much swelling.

I've taken it just over 9 before and it was sleep juice.

So probably 8.5 to get the balance between increase in volume and quality of high.

It's a very balanced high at 8 weeks between being euphoric and couchlock.

That all said, it will be interesting to see if this changes with the living soil.

Just an update to keep track, the living soils NL5 has had it's first top dress and has responded well. The bottled nutes NL5 has not needed anything.

The difference is still night and day but the real test will be later when the 11ltr pot size will be tested.

Great job at documenting the comparison between the two. The one on the left looks like it might have P def or something as it's way behind the ammended soil.

Just out of curiosity, how much bottled feed are you adding per litre?

Great job on the grow buddy! Amended soil is hard to get right and many fail due to lots of external factors that can upset the balance of things. And corrections can be hard due to the time it takes to bring things in balance. You're killing it tictok! Keep up the good work buddy!

Many thanks Seymore, appreciate the comments.

The standard soil NL looks pretty much par for the course for this clone, but you could well be right. I had a bit of a light issue with the leds being too powerful/too low so that might have caused a problem. But with these bottled Canna nutes they recommend 2ml /Ltr and I normally give 1.5.

That said, I've never seen this clone grow such big leaves or with such vigour as the living soil example.

I cannot really take credit for the grow, all I'm doing is using the amendments and top dress regime from the website, scaled down. They recommend a 20ltr pot so I've halved the amendments for my 11ltr pot.

https://livingsoilsfertiliser.com/

You buy the various packs and follow instructions, they are small batch and cheaper than the bottled nutes.

I am expecting issues in the 11ltr pot, especially as I cannot flip for a couple of weeks but thats the test.

I know one guy that runs autos in a 20ltr and has used the same soil for over a year, amending after each crop.

:thanks: Of course @seymore_budz was right, the bottled nutes clone was hungry so has caught up a bit. This one has also had some kelp and malted barley as this is what I would normally do.

Both have had some mild LST to open them out and will be flipped in a couple of days after cuts are taken from the living soil plant.

Other observations are the branches are are much thicker on the living soil clone, leaves are bigger also.

Here's the group shot, two on the left are the NL5 comparison, the other two are Guerilla Fume from Lucky Dog Seed Company and a couple of Bodhi HashplantD (ChemD x 88G13HP) cuts that will flower out as an experiment as there's a few more waiting in the wings.

Exactly 1 week after flip and everything is still consistent.

The first 'Bloom' topdress was given at flip for the living soil NL and the canna 'organic' nutes for the comparison clone continue with veg until next week while they stretch.

This pheno doesn't stretch much but the living soil clone has tighter node spacing and is generally a fuller healthier expression.

So far the scaled down instructions on top dressing have worked a treat, no signs of deficiency or excess yet especially considering it's an 11ltr pot.

Here they are......canna nutes on the left, living soil on the right.

I can say that it's a bloody joy not dicking around with bottled nutes!
