I bash the shit out of the root ball. The earth goes into a black bag - which is then sometimes dumped in garden, or use it again sometime. The remains of the root ball goes into the waste bin and out with the rest of the rubbish. I make sure there's no stem.
Depending on the time of year, I take all the pots to the local tip along with root balls of tomato and chilli plants.

This thread (smokey's comment specifically) got me thinking about compost and since I've turned an unused water butt into a compost bin. I'm using straw/chicken manure/plant material and giving it a good 6 months to cool. By early next year (fingers crossed) I won't have to buy anymore compost.
