We had chickens once, they refused to eat anything but mashed potatoes, destroyed the garden and the dogs finally ate them.

what kinda shrubs you thinking? blueberry bushes are a go to for me or a mix of different currents (currents seem to grow anywhere you put them)

if ya thinking low maintenance shrubs just to look nice, there are pittosporum varieties to suit most choices of colour scheme

these are just ideas for thorn free shrubberies. but if ya have any rough idea what youd like to get out of the area.

perennial planting could also be an idea, something like euphorbia can look nice and also limit weeds taking over an area

That's the thing Mo... ANY shrubs will do us but where do I start looking?

How do I plan a large bed?

Will everything live together or do some plants hate each other?

Will a tree here and there in the beds take up too much valuable rootage space?

I'm no expert by a long shot. However, it depends what you're after. Plants : Have a look at neighbours or nearby gardens to see what grows well in your area.
Aspect : North, South, East of West facing. Open to the elements/ sheltered.
Soil type : can be improved.
Use plants /shrubs that spread of its a large area, or ones you can split later.
At the end of the day it needs to be what you're after & easy to manage.

Garden is South facing. We're in a valley so depends which way the wind blows but I'd say open to elements.
Soil type is shite, full of slate stone and random patches of clay.

I was just saying to the wife on the dog walk down the lane, if we choose shrubs that spread we only need to condition the soil that we plant them in maybe and not the whole bed????

The green bit needs planting up all the way down to the fence. I'm having a path through the middle up to a sloped lawn on the left, that's easy enough to mow in 6 passes and the dog likes running up n down that bit too.



I dug a flat bit today for a small lawn that runs around the house... Easy peasy to mow.



Now I need a beer.

might be a case of walking around the garden centre looking at labels of stuff that ya think looks nice for what will grow where ya want it

dont stress competition between plants too much, just give them a good spacing for now and they will settle into what area they have over the next few years. nice thick mulch after planting too will help keep weeding to a minimum
