Magnetic ballasts - recycling?

Post by Bulls »

Has anyone sold magnetic ballasts to recycling centers? Do they take them? I was given quite a lot of them and was hoping to be able to sell them for scrap?

Usually they will give say... £1 for mixed and £20 for seperated ( not the numbers but that idea )

In the states they will take them only if they don't have PCB's.
Quote from the government:
"No PCBs" ballasts can be disposed with normal trash in most states. Ballasts that have PCBs are regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA). They aren't hazardous when used as intended, as long as they don't leak.
Ballasts manufactured after January 1, 1979, do not contain PCBs.

Nanooks on it along right path. They`ll take any metals and they dont make you strip anything down in UK although it maybe worth doing iff your a tight git and seperating all metals out, copper, steel iron etc otherwise they`ll just sling them through weighbridge/scales as mixed heavy metals which is lowest rate for mixed up scrap and a hit to your pocket, but yes then their guys will do donkey work stripping. Easy shit like copper cabling stick in a sack and tell them its copper, i think theirs 3 kinds cleaned or shiny (highest rates), burnt (2nd highest) or not stripped (lowest rate for copper) That said it maybe worth stripping the ballasts down for copper i would think they have quite a bit in cus price is through roof and it could well be a good bit extra in your pocket Bulls.

take the copper wiring out Bulls , collect it and wait fir the price to go up .

I made a significant amout of $ doing this . Thousands per year collecting it from plumbing jobs and repairs . One year I had 1000Lbs of it from ripping out the old Fountains and piping at work , rekon i got 3900$

Tin metal ,steel and all that is worth peanuts costs more in gas to haul it !! Its the brass, bronze and copper, aluminum you want
