Measuring lux and how it can improve our yields

Post by Josh »

Hey everyone!
Got stoned the other night and did some more research as always always something new to learn, just thought I'd share the results with you.

I recently obtained a cheap lux meter off amazon, cost 20$ u.s. dollars (sorry for not converting)
I mainly purchased this because I suspected some light intensity issues on a couple of my buds and I confirmed that using this meter.
Here's an excellent article from our friends at royal queen seeds where they describe the ins and outs and why measuring lux matters when it comes to growing indoors
https://www.royalqueenseeds.com/blog-ho ... ields-n977

According to them a good number to shoot for during veg is 15,000-50,000

Flower is 45,000-65,000, with a maximum recommended ammount of 75,000 lux

I took my first reading at 13 inches directly below my 600 watt hps (air cooled hood) reading was just over 81,000 lux
Unfortunately nothing I can do at this point, they're tangled in a screen. But no worries.
Why you ask?
Because merely 5 inches to the right it drops all the way down to 34,000 lux!

And THIS my friends is the main reason I wanted to share this with you.
A mere 5 inch difference and the light intensity is cut in half, unbelievable.

Needless to say on my future grows I will be using multiple, lower watt light sources. As long as the canopy is even I think this is going to dramatically increase my yields.
Knowledge is power!!

Just for shits and giggles I measured my 600 watt mh (same style hood)
13 inches directly under the bulb measures 42,000 lux. And 35 inches to where the top of my veg plants are is 13,000 lux

These are both hortilux bulbs btw, not that it should matter too much.

Unfortunately I don't think these meters are accurate for led's, it takes a spectrometer which is far more expensive.
I measured my led anyways just for the hell of it.
Light is a dominator 2xxl, pulls 600 watts according to my meter.
At 10 inches below the light it reads about 50,000 lux. But this is with the lenses OFF.
I removed them because my plants are just too close

Below are a couple pics and also screenshots I took from a lighting website

Hope this information helps! Happy growing

lux is just what is seen by the human eye and is not a good way of measuring light for horticulture. Plants use a frequency band not seen by the human eye. This is best measured in PAR / PPFD

Would love a par meter, lol. But if you're getting an even lux reading across your whole tent it still proves that your light spread is good
