How to make Bokashi Bran Substitute - Coco Coir

Post by KD »

Normally Bokashi Bran is a grain, that's innocuoated with EM1 and molasses and it's used to make Bokashi pre compost. You can make your own variety of this using LAB and Coco Coir

What you need

5 ltr tub with airtight lid
Compressed Coco Brick
LABS
Dechlorinated water

What you do

Hydrate your Coco Brick with dechlorinated water

Drain out any excess water in there by placing in a bucket with holes, and let gravity pull the water out.

Use the top 5 litres to fill your tub with, pour in a cup of LAB and seal tightly. Make sure there's no air gap in the tub. We need this to be anerobic.

Leave the tub sealed for a minimum of 2 weeks. Once this time has passed, you can take a look. It should smell fermented but not unpleasant.

That's it. Simple eh.

You can either take it out and lay it in a thin layer to dry out, making the bacteria go dormant, or use it as it is.

If you do use it as it is, use a plastic bag to keep the air gap at the top as small as possible as the level drops. I fill the bag with hydroton clay pebbles to keep some weight on it too.
